3CS - Quail

A little catch up post. This is something I made for the 3CS colour palette challenge and it was finished just before I went on holiday. If you've been following you'll know that I have been exploring cloth doll making in these challenges but with no sewing machine I decided to attempt something a bit smaller. So I went for the Quail pattern from ' The Artful Bird' Book by Abigail Patner. You might also know that orange is my favourite colour so there was no way I was going to miss out making something from this colour palette. Not a partridge in a pear tree but a quail in a Bay tree. :)

Ruth

Can you cast your mind back a couple of weeks? You might remember that I was working on a doll for last months 3CS challenge, you might remember that she was nearly done but not quite. Well I finally got round to adding the final embellishments and she's done. Here she is standing in the sun like the proper beach girl she is.I ummed and ahhed about whether she should have hair, but I grew to like her without. She hasn't told me her whole story yet, but she's a maiden of the sea, she looks young but has been haunting the shores for more years that you or I have been alive. She's not one for trinkets but she has a simple necklace made from stars she found on the beach, a shawl made from cast off fishing net, and a simple tie round her waist made from rope she found on her wanderings.

I'm not sure that I am going to be able to participate in this months challenge which is a real shame as the colours are fabulous. I may try and hand stitch up a little something if I get time in the next few days though. We'll see.

A great mail day

Look at all these wonderful goodies that came sailing through my letterbox yesterday.
And inside that lovely kitty fabric was this beautiful book cover.
Actually the book is perfect. I have been having lots of ideas pop in to my head for projects that I'd like to tackle and with limited time at the moment some of the ideas pop straight back out to be forgotten. I've been meaning to get something to write them all down in, so this is just the thing.

And how did I come by these wonderful gifts you might be asking. Everyone who participates in the 3CS palette challenge went in to a draw and I was the lucky winner last month. Anyone can join in the challenge at anytime, so don't forget to pop over to the 3CS blog and find out about this month's colour palette, and how to participate in the challenge. There is lots of other great stuff over there too so go check it out :)

pink checks

What has been going on with blogger these past few days. Between this and my c and g blog I've lost about 4 posts. Hopefully things are back to normal now.Is it Saturday again already? Where did that week go? The only pink happenings in my neck of the woods this week has been the making of the chequerboard blocks. I'm happy that I've gotten them done though, it means that I have the rest of the month to let pink take me wherever it wants to go.

Stumped

Work has been continuing on my 3CS doll. I just love working with this colour palette.

The collage is complete.Over the top I stitched some sheers using metallic thread. I made a loose wavy grid pattern
Next it was time to have fun with the heat gun.
The body has been made..... and I'm loving the stump doll pattern from Ray Slater's book
She is one tall lady. Now I'm stumped though I've run out of stuffing for her arms, so things have stalled a bit, and I'm not sure if I'm going to get time to get more before this month's challenge ends of Sunday. She will get finished, I've decided she is called Ruth by the way, but it may not be in time for the deadline.

Scraphappy Saturday and 3CS

Pink is the new colour for May in the Rainbow scrap challenge. At first I wasn't sure what to do. I think I might have mentioned before that there aren't really any colours that I don't like, but pink is one of those that I have to be in the mood to work with....if that makes any sense whatsoever.
Anyhow I've started gathering the scraps ready to cut for my chequerboard blocks. I've also been flickering through some of the magazines that I've bought in the past and a few perfectly pink projects have been jumping out at me from the pages. So once the chequerboard blocks are done I'm happy that I'm going to have plenty of ideas to play with.

I have been working with some blue and brown scraps this last couple of days, as I'm making another collage which will become my base fabric for the latest doll for the 3CS challenge, so the scraps haven't been totally neglected. This is what I have so far. With no plans for this weekend I'm hoping to get in lots of stitching hours so hopefully I'll have lots of creativity to share soon.

Fragments

As per usual I'm going to be pushing it to try and get my doll for this month's 3CS challenge done on time. But finally I have made a start.I've been gathering fragments that remind me of walks on the beach - what a beautiful inspiration photo we have this time round. I'll be using the basic pattern from this wonderful bookIt's going to be really touch and go as to whether I get her done, but with no particular plans for this weekend I'm hoping I'll manage to get in lots of stitching time

Scraphappy Saturday and 3CS

Don't you love it when you can multitask? This post is good for both the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and I'm happy to report that I just made the deadline for the 3CS challenge too :)You might remember that last week I was busy making up some collage fabrics from my tiny scraps. Well they have all now been cut up and stitched back together to make a new doll. I'm call her Collette. She's my entry for this last months 3CS challenge. Actually it's quite tricky to get a picture of her as a whole as she is really long and skinny. Again as with the other dolls I've made this year there is plenty of room for improvement but overall I'm really happy with how she turned out.I found the construction a bit strange as you basically make a flat head, with only the tiniest amount of stuffing and then stitch that on to the neck of your main doll form. My face shape went a little squiffy and there a few tucks where there shouldn't be, but I'm not calling them mistakes they add character ;) After all we can't all be perfect.I do like her long elegant shape though. I think I'll add some kind of hook to her back and have her hanging from the wall somewhere. I also love that she had separate little hands and feet attached to the long limbs with beads. These small pieces were quite tricky to turn but that was probably as much to do with the fact that I had seams in my fabrics from the collaging as it was the size of the pieces.I gave her a great big shock of hair made from some yarn that I found in my yarn box. It's a mix from two different balls in the same range on in green and the other in pinks and purples, they were just perfect for the colour scheme.

I'm loving taking part in both of these challenges such a great way to use up bits and pieces that I've had just hanging around waiting to find a use :)

If you want to find out what everyone else has been doing this week in the Rainbow Challenge you can visit here There will be a linky post to take you to everyone elses blogs.

And if you want to see what else has been made for the 3CS challenge check out the Flickr Group here

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend, I know I will :)

So busy

Life is just so busy for me at the moment it's unreal. The days are just flying and I never seem to fit in as much as I want to. So I want to apologise to all the lovely people that have been leaving me comments recently that I haven't yet had time to reply to. I'm behind with email, I'm behind with blog reading, I'm behind with my to do list, and just generally behind with life, lol. Hopefully I'll catch up soon, but it won't be this weekend as we're away for a couple of days...

Anyway enough waffle. I'm busy trying to get my 3CS doll finished for this months deadline which is tomorrow, eeek! The body is just about done. I'm busy on the headThe face has been drafted and I have started adding some colour. This is what I have so far (the picture shows my head next to the one in the book)Now I have to spend some time after work adding more colour and getting some hair on this little lady. I'm hoping I might squeeze in just before the deadline.

3CS - Another arm and leg

I've made the other arm and leg for my doll for the 3CS challenge. I'm a little further on that this with the doll now but haven't had the chance to take pictures. It's highly unlikely she'll be finished before the next challenge is issued but she will get finished!

Iris is coming to life

Look the body parts are starting to pile up round here.......Iris is starting to come to life. I'm sure you will have noticed that this girl has had some colour added to her face.I'm really quite pleased with how she turned out. The faces have been really my biggest fear in the whole doll making process, but Jan's book gives some really clear instructions on how to construct and colour the face features. She is by no means perfect and I had to improvise on some of the colours as I didn't have exact colour matches in my water colour pencils as given in the book but she's relatively realistic looking so I'm happy.

Things have ground to a halt in her construction though for the time being. I'm having a few problems with the arms.I'm not sure that it's picked up too well in the photo, but the fingers are made positionable by adding some chenille sticks (pipe cleaners to some of us!!) in to the hands. I wasn't able to find any white sticks and tried to take a short cut by adding some coloured ones that I managed to buy, but I'm really not happy. As the flesh fabric is so light the colour is showing through the fabric a lot.

So I'll be making some new arms as soon as I can get hold of some white sticks. I also need some extra long needles for adding the arms and legs to the main body. Have things on order, just need to wait for them to arrive in the mail so I can continue......

New Palette Challenge

This last week I have been making a start on my new project for the current 3CreativeStudios Palette Challenge. This is the inspiration picture.Aren't the colours fabulous. I have decided to carry on my with doll making journey and will be using the challenge palettes over the next few months to work my way through this beautiful book. Starting with the simplest doll pattern in the book.So I raided my fabrics and pulled out a whole variety of stuff that I think matches the palette, and of course something to make the fleshy parts of the doll with.I will be making the body from these cotton fabrics that I pulled from my stash. I have also be raiding the non-cotton stash for possible pieces to make the dolls skirt from. The picture above shows what I came up with but I haven't really narrowed things down yet to what will actually get used, figured I'd try and get the doll form made first and play with ideas for decoration after. So I have made a start on putting my doll together, who will of course be called Iris. Even the basic doll is proving to be a challenge for me as the face is drawn and painted on, and as I mentioned in my last doll post drawing is not something I'm good at.So far I've attempted to sketch some features on to the face. It's looking as though Iris won't be having the most delicate features in the world, but I guess it may all change and look totally different once I've added the colour in. Watch this space I guess .......

3Creative Studios Challenge - A tale of procrastination

When I heard about the 3creative studios colour palette challenge earlier this year I knew I wanted to join in. I have a big pile of doll making books on the shelf and although I have attempted a couple of dolls in the past it's something that I've been wanting to play more with and just never got round to. Anyhow I thought that I might marry the two up and use the palette challenge to play around with dolls.

Well the inspiration picture and colours for this month were announced a while ago and I've been procrastinating. I took a quick glance at the picture and decided that the colours weren't speaking to me. I've been putting off starting anything until the beginning of this week when I decided that I didn't want to fail at the first hurdle. I told myself that even though the colours weren't speaking to me I'd join the challenge by making something small like a postcard. So I printed out the picture and palette and raided the scrap boxes. Wow, once I laid these colours out I just loved them together. I couldn't wait to get going and the idea of a postcard went right out of the window and the original plan for experimenting with doll forms came back again. I decided for my first doll attempt I'd have a go at a pretty simple, primitive kind of goddess form.
I figured it might be interesting to play around with the fabric weaving idea again. The picture above shows my woven 'base' fabric.I really like the earthy tones of all the fabrics together, and that along with the original picture which was of a pine bough really gave me the feeling of the colours that you might experience on a woodland walk.I decided that my doll would be a goddess of the pine forest. I started decorating the fabric with some of the leafy patterns that are among the decorative stitches on my sewing machine.I just randomly stitched all over the cloth in a few different pattern variations. It was an interesting experiment as I really liked some of the bits on the cloth but knew that there was no guarantee that these would be on the final doll as the fabric would get cut up again.I have to admit that it was a bit tricky turning the doll, particularly getting the layered woven fabric through the tiny neck, but I managed it in the end. Got a bit more recycling done too as I again stuffed out the doll form with some of the bits and pieces that would have otherwise ended up in the bin from other projects. You might recognise some mug rug trimmings going in here :)I was a bit undecided about what to do with the face. Originally I thought I'd use a rubber stamped face, but I liked how a bit of the vine stitching was going up the side of her face and didn't want to cover that so decided to go with paint. Sadly I'm no artist and faces will be one of the things that I hope to practise as the doll making experiments continue, but for now I think this one came out ok.I added some yarn that I had in the cupboard for her hair and she was done.I had so much fun making her, and am really pleased with how she came out but I can't help thinking that maybe she could have been even better if I hadn't left it all until the last minute. Moral of the story - Don't procrastinate just because you think you don't like something more often than not if you just get stuck in you'll realise that you love it!!And I even had enough of the woven base fabric left to cut a couple of backgrounds for postcards. They're on the sewing table waiting for a few extra embellishments and then will be tucked away again until needed.

Can't wait to see where the next palette will take me.
